This year is my 19th year of homeschooling. I have purchased several different math curricula over the years. However, math is not my favorite subject(nor any of my daughters’ favorite subject). Though we have used some good materials in the past, I felt the need to find something better this year for my 7 year old daughter. I want her to like math and more importantly UNDERSTAND it. So, after much research, I decided to purchase RightStart Math and give it a try. If nothing else, I knew it would be a good supplement to any other math curricula I have used. So far, it has been amazing! The manipulatives keep things interesting and allow hands-on learning. The card games are a happy alternative to boring written worksheets. Though, there are simple worksheets to give my daughter practice in writing and calculating on paper. The abacus is such a great visual to help teach mental math! My daughter wanted to stand it up on the table to use it. It kept falling over making a loud noise as it hit the table. My talented and brilliant husband made a stand for the abacus and solved our problem! The lesson plans are so easy to follow and are not complicated or overwhelming in any way. The cards are laminated and well-made and are very durable. I was worried that some of the methods of teaching would be difficult for me to get used to or could be confusing to re-teach my daughter(such as counting one-ten one for eleven). It has not been difficult. It is just another way of teaching math and can be used along with information she already knows.
I will say that purchasing all the manipulatives is not cheap. But as other parents have suggested, it is well with the price to purchase the quality products from RightStart. I was able to call the company and purchase several “gently used” products from their warehouse which saved me a considerable amount of money. It is well worth the effort to call and ask if cost is a concern.
If you need to add some fun, quality one-on-one teaching/learning, and a program that explains math in a tangible way I highly recommend giving RightStart a try. You really have nothing to lose because you can use the products along with other math curricula if you desire.

I have used Right Start for 7 years with 3 kids. I love that it takes no prep. I love that it teaches a concept many different ways because my kids all learn differently. I love the games to reinforce learning. But I have to admit I love the ease of it most of all. It is a great program and works for all different learning styles. My oldest dislikes math, so the games were indispensable with her, helping her to focus and have fun. My youngest loves math and loves the curriculum–doesn’t need the games but needs the manipulative to keep him on track. My middle is much more middle of the line, but the curriculum worked well for all of them.
