Homeschooling in Alabama

    With three avenues for homeschooling requiring different basic standards for reporting, Alabama ranks as a low regulation state to homeschool in.
  • Teaching

    Alabama does not require teaching certifications unless instruction is given by a private tutor. Homeschoolers using the private school option are required to teach physical education. Homeschoolers using the private tutor option are required to teach the same branches of study as the local public school.
  • Testing

    Alabama does not require standardized testing or assessments.
  • Registration

    Alabama does require notification of intent to homeschool.
  • Grade Level

    Homeschooling is allowed in all grades. Alabama requires children between the ages of 6 and 17 to be schooled.
  • Reporting

    Attendance tracking is required of all three avenues of homeschooling in Alabama. Immunization records or exemption must be given if your child is homeschooling under a private school option.

Advice For Homeschooling In Alabama

While Alabama takes a minimally invasive approach to regulations and requirements of homeschool families, staying diligent with your record keeping is still very important. Remember to file your intent to homeschool and your student’s immunization records or exemption annually. Be sure to utilize a planner, online program, or other method for tracking daily attendance. It only takes a moment of your daily routine to track attendance, but it can cost you hours of time trying to recall correct attendance if procrastination is allowed to set in.
